PESTICIDE EXPOSURE AND HEALTH PROBLEMS AMONG WOMEN IN REPRODUCTIVE AGE: A LITERATURE REVIEW

Abstract

Pesticides are persistent organic pollutants that are resistant to environmental degradation and have a negative impact on human health and the environment. Exposure to chemicals from pesticides, can be accepted by anyone, including women, both women of reproductive age and women who are pregnant. This study was a literature review study with data collection process was carried out by obtaining articles relevant to the research objectives in the ScienceDirect databases. The keywords used include “Pesticide for Women” and “Pesticide for Women Farmer”. After that, 10 articles that match the research objectives were selected. Exposure to pesticides during early pregnancy may increase the risk of adverse birth outcomes such as preterm delivery, small for gestational age, and low birth weight. Pesticide use is associated with a wide range of risks to human health and the environment due to poor handling practices, inadequate knowledge about pesticide toxicity, and the widespread availability of banned or unauthorized chemicals, and that impacts are also largely underestimated and underreported. Multiple approaches including implementation of the regulation, choosing alternative biopesticides, using personal protective equipment, and regular counseling on all aspects of pesticides, their impact on health are recommended to minimize pesticide's negative effects
