Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus is a degenerative disease that can be controlled with four management pillars. Family support is needed to improve dietary compliance. The study aims to determine the relationship of family support on adherence to the Diabetes Mellitus diet pattern in the elderly. Methods of research is an analytical study with a cross-sectional sample design, 54 elderly with diabetes mellitus ≥ 60 years with the sampling technique was purposive sampling using the HDFSS (Henserling Diabetes Familly Support Scale) and the PDAQ (Perceived Dietary Adherence Questionaire). The results found that most of the elderly experienced low adherence to the type 2 Diabetes Mellitus diet pattern with poor family support as many as 30 elderly (55.6%). The results of the chi square statistical test was found that the p- value = 0.001 (<0.05) then Ha was accepted, this indicates that is a significant relationship between Family Support and Dietary Pattern Compliance (Diabetes Mellitus) in the elderly. The implication are the elderly can adhere to the Diabetes Mellitus diet pattern recommended by health workers in order to prevent complications in the elderly and for health services it is necessary to consider the creation of an advertising banner that describes providing family support to family members.
